On Sunday, despite searing heat, our 10 man crew installed two SaddleSpan structures: the Duospan and the Trispan. These structures will be used for The Kent University Summer Ball 2012.
Normally it takes eight men one day just to install a Trispan, so our guys worked extremely efficiently and, most importantly, safely to achieve this two structure build in such hot conditions.
Whether you are planning or attending a festival/event it is a good idea to understand how to stay safe in hot weather, how to recognise symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and how to treat them. You could save someone’s life!
Heat Exhaustion
If the body looses too much liquid and salts due to long exposure to a hot environment, symptoms of heat exhaustion that may start showing include:
- Excess sweating
- Nausea and vomiting
- Feeling light-headed/faint
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
A person suffering from heat exhaustion should:
- Rest in a cool or shaded place, air-conditioned if possible
- Sip plenty of liquids – water or electrolyte replacement sports drinks
- Take a cool shower/bath, soak feet in a bucket of water or place a wet towel on the shoulders.
Keep on doing this until the person feels better.
Heat Stroke
If a person suffering from heat exhaustion continues to be untreated and remains in a high temperature environment the potential life-threatening condition of heat stroke may develop.
The symptoms of heat stroke include:
- Confusion
- Hot, dry but not sweaty skin
- Rapid and shallow breathing
- Seizures
- Loss of consciousness
Heat stroke is a medical emergency and the person should receive medical attention at once.
Fortunately heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be avoided by the simple means of:
- Staying in the shade or going into the shade regularly
- Wearing clothing that is loose fitting and light in shade and fabric
- Drinking plenty of water or other cool drinks
- Avoiding dehydrating drinks such as alcohol or caffeine
- Not over exerting yourself on very hot days
Our crew stayed safe during the hot weather and did an excellent job. By following these simple measures you can have a great time at all the festivals and events being held this summer.
